Tips for a successful newborn photoshoot!
As a lifestyle photographer, newborn sessions have quickly become some of my favorite photoshoots. I prefer to capture families in a natural environment instead of some of the typical newborn poses that makes them look uncomfortable and unnatural. I often recommend to capture these sessions in the home as it provides a setting where the family and baby are most comfortable. It also provides the opportunity to capture photos in place that is special, preserving memories of where your baby was brought home from the hospital.
Newborn shoots can sometimes be stressful for parents, but here are a few tips that I recommend for a newborn shoot that goes smoothly and is as stress free as possible!
Give yourself enough time. I always recommend booking newborn sessions that are at least 1 hour in length so that you can have some wiggle room in case your baby is fussy, has a blowout and needs an outfit change, or you need to stop and feed your baby. You will feel more relaxed which will lead to more natural photos if you are not worrying about running out of time the whole session.
Keep your home warm! Babies like warm spaces and are often more comfortable and less fussy when the environment around them is not too cold. You can also have extra blankets and swaddles nearby to help with this as well.
Feed your baby before the session. By feeding and burping your baby at least 20 minutes before the session, this will lead to a sleepy, content baby that is more relaxed for the photos.
Have extra supplies nearby. I would recommend to prepare to have an extra change of clothes, diapers, bottle, pacifiers, and toys nearby in case they are needed. If the newborn is a little more alert, it can be helpful to have toys or flash cards to help guide their attention and gaze.
